Vicissitudes

the beauty of languages

Languages are beautiful.

I speak English, Malay, Mandarin, a tiny bit of Cantonese and Hokkien which is spoken by my family, and am currently learning Japanese at an early intermediate level. I've been very blessed and lucky to grow up in a multi-ethnic and multi-racial country which allowed me to learn multiple languages, and in turn connecting with other cultures other than my own.

It's so rewarding to learn languages as it can be a great way to take a peek into another culture that you couldn't otherwise without knowing the language and uncover an entirely new perspective. Aside from that, you're able to do stuff like read books, listen to music, watch movies, and speak to people in your target language. Furthermore, if you become fluent in that language, you can move to the country where the language is spoken, since speaking a language automatically makes you a part of the "tribe" in which the language is spoken.

Above all, languages are a means of seeing and understanding the world as it is, and serve as a bridge between cultures. Phoenix Hou's video about how "learning languages ruined his life" really struck a chord with me. He talks about how the most beautiful poems, music, books are all written in another language, and how language can be used to break down barriers between cultures and tear down veils of bigotry due to the language barrier. Prejudices are lost and you see people for what they really are, just another human like you.

So for whatever reason you might want to pick up a language, I promise you it will be worth it.

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart. - Nelson Mandela
